Story - Humbling Experience

HUMBLING EXPERIENCE
By: Mr. Lawrence Tan, Founder
April 17, 2008

The year was 2001, because of the political instability and the economic hardship in the Philippines; I decided to migrate back to Hong Kong. In my mind what sort of business can I put up there to support me and my family? I did some preliminary study and the closest thing that I can think of is something related to the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW), as there are more than 200,000 Filipinos working in Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore as domestic helpers.

So I went back and started an entertainment company with some friends. Initially I was in film showing or exhibition, and my first movie from VIVA Films (VIVA Entertainment) is entitled “ABAKADA INA” starring famous Filipino actor Albert Martinez and actress Lorna Tolentino. It was not easy doing this business, but definitely exciting. I did not make any money out of this, but this project surely has propelled me to the limelight of show business.

I also expanded my business to include publishing, advertising and special events which let me meet a lot of corporate and showbiz personalities. Aside from VIVA, I was also doing business with ABS-CBN (Star Cinema) and Regal Films. These 3 are the top entertainment companies in the Philippines.

Later I ventured into video and music products distribution at the invitation of the VIVA management which proves to be one of the most disastrous decisions I have ever made. I was thrown into the world of video & music piracy syndicates without me having any knowledge and experience on how they operate.

To make the long story short, I trusted the wrong people. I was eventually arrested by the Hong Kong Customs for the suspicion of engaging in the distribution of infringing or pirated Filipino entertainment products.

In spite of the more than 10 prosecuting witnesses and only one defending me, I was acquitted after 2 years of grueling court trial in front of a Hong Kong English judge. I can still remember that day in 2005 when the verdict was read. The judge said he doesn’t trust me, but there are not enough evidences to convict me guilty beyond reasonable doubt of all the offenses I was charged with.

I personally know who the real people behind the said piracy are. I am sure some will still have doubts about me regarding this incident. But I have learned my lessons well
not to trust anyone easily especially if business is concerned.

It is truly a humbling experience that I will never forget.

Pictures - Heaven

Do you know what those pictures are? Those are the pictures of the planet we live in called Earth. Do you know that mankind doesn’t have any other place we can call home except this planet?

It is sad that we are consciously or unconsciously destroying this planet by polluting it with our factories; riding cars that burn fossil fuels; dumping wastes into rivers, lakes and oceans; cutting down forest trees indiscriminately; hunting various animals to the point of near extinction; pointless human wars.

When will we realize that our heaven is actually this planet called Earth? Hence the famous line HEAVEN ON EARTH. We can all work toward saving this planet from destruction or just let it die eventually making our life here like hell.

Remember our children and their children so on and so forth. They live in this same planet. Do we care about them? Do we care about their future?

Quote - Life is Short. Death Can Happen Anytime.

Whether we agree or not, it is a known fact that all us human beings including other living things have just one life and that this life is not infinite. One day or another we all will experience same thing. Whether we are rich or poor, young or old, male or female, all of us will expire from existence in this finite universe.

So make the best out of your life. Be different. Enjoy your life the way it should be. Set yourself FREE. Be Free From Tears. Free From Sorrows & Sufferings.

It’s all in the MIND.

Quote - Nothing is Forever.

Do you believe that Nothing Is Forever? You might say a DIAMOND IS FOREVER. But I am convinced that even a diamond will not last if you subject it to extreme heat or pressure.

Of course there are other things that will not last forever. For instance WEALTH, FAME and POWER will not last forever. I have seen a lot of rich people who lost everything they have. Actors or actresses who are famous now could one day be nothing. Dictators like Adolf Hitler and Saddam Hussein who once upon a time sit in their thrones like kings will later just fade away.

So make the best out of your life. Be different. Use your wealth, fame and power for the good of mankind and mother earth. Enjoy your life the way it should be.

Set yourself FREE. Be Free From Tears. Free From Sorrows & Sufferings.
It’s all in the MIND.

Quote - Time is Gold

Do you feel that time runs out so fast every time you look at your wrist watch you are wearing? Sometimes I do.

It is as if I have so many things yet to accomplish, but the day just isn’t enough for us. Most of us are very busy working our butts out just to earn a decent living that we tend to forget that there are many other important things in life left undone.

Things like spending quality time with your parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, husband, wife and children. We usually take them for granted. Sometimes it is too late when we realize we lost all those years. Wasting our time for nothing. We always said “If only we can turn back the hands of time.”

So make the best out of your life. Be different. Spend some time with the people you love or the people who love you. Enjoy your life the way it should be.

Set yourself FREE. Be Free From Tears. Free From Sorrows & Sufferings.

It’s all in the MIND.

Story - Letter from My Schoolmate

Hi LT,

I took a peek of your website
http://www.freefromtears.com and read regarding your dad.

IT’S BEEN 5 YEARS

I do not know how you feel right now cause it’s been 5 years since my dad died and my life is still uncertain. Though we are not the best of friends nor the closest schoolmate but I would like to share what I have learned and experienced for the last 5 years. This is no preaching and please don’t think I’m enticing you to go back to attend a Christian church. And I hope what I share here is something you can pick up... this is about me, all I hope is to share...

NEW THINGS FOR 2003

Year 2003, this is the start of new things in our life, most of the last 2 months of 2002 has been strenuous, my sister is preparing for her wedding on April and my dad just got out after being hospitalized for almost 2 weeks.

April came, my sister got married and my dad is somehow taking it easy for the next two months until June 16 the father's day, they had a good weekend in Cavite which they usually frequent during holidays.

My dad felt unwell from Friday night until Sunday morning. I asked permission to go to church because I have service and he prayed with me. He went to get his Toyota Landcruiser to take mama to their school reunion in Manila Hotel and returned home still not feeling well. Pain was so unbearable that we took him to the hospital on Monday June 23 whether he liked it or not.

TRAGIC DAY

Morning around ten the doctors came and told him his appendix is near to burst and he has to have a
surgery.

Around 5 pm, I went to our accountant to get the necessary papers for the hospital and my brother in law kept telling me to hurry up. I didn’t know why. When I was in the bus, my brother in law told me my papa died. I cried crazy until I reached our home and took my youngest sister to the Chinese General Hospital.

I didn’t see my dad died, I didn’t spend the last few minutes with him neither did I have two weeks to take care of him.

I was so sorrowful for a year, can't stop talking about him, even now. He is always part of any conversation, things he thought me, things I promised him, things that has anything to do with him, even after five years, it still hard, I don’t think it’s something people can cure.

TO COMFORT

I was surprised to see that in our church lots of brothers and sisters lost their fathers too in the year after. I believe now in hindsight the Lord used me to be a comfort because we had a chance to comfort each other.

What to do now, still uncertain. The future seems bleak if you look at the situation worldwide, but during the last 3 years the Lord healed me little by little, step by step, inch by inch. How I wish it could be instant but it is not. It also is difficult to say time heals. Actually I believe it’s not time....

STILL SHED SOME TEARS

I believe I had to let go, and in time I did, not because it hurt less, because it doesn’t work that way for me. I still shed a tear when I see his stuff and I will tell you there are so many things I have at our old place, that reminds me of him.

I love my papa very much, even now, just sharing makes me teary-eyed. Letting go, it’s not just memories, but the reality that we can live on without being so sad is possible. It's not easy, but with the Lord's healing we can.

I got my sisters and brothers in the Valenzuela church who not only prayed for me but also try to understand my sadness and helped me go on, my family and friends tried and I love them for it, but only the Lord really helped me.

ONLY THE LORD

In my opinion, He is the Only One who knows me, who truly knows my sadness. He is the Only One who knows that I have difficulty to overcome everything, I was really lost. No one can talk to you during these times, no matter what time in the day. And yes it looks preachy, looks religious, but in reality, no amount of people who even went through the same thing can truly help. Only the Lord who really knows everything.

Just want to share. Whatever you believe in I hope that you can give Him a chance, He never gives up on us. Just a thought.

God Bless,

Story - My Favorite Movie

MY FAVORITE MOVIE
By Mr. Lawrence Tan, Founder
February 13, 2008

I always tried my best to watch a movie every Friday or Saturday night. It is one way of taking away my stress. Of course there are other things that I like doing that can have the same effect. Things like playing with my remote control helicopter or my Siamese cats; Going to a first class spa for a relaxing massage; Sitting at a nearby Starbucks, drinking coffee while reading a newspaper or magazine.

I could not count how many movies that I’ve watched over the years. Definitely it is more than a hundred, mostly it is American made films. To be honest, I don’t have any particular movie that I can call it my favorite, because I love them all.

But there is one recent film entitled “The Bucket List” that touches my heart so much. The Bucket List is a 2007 American film directed by Rob Reiner and starring award winners Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The story follows two terminally ill men on a road trip with a wish list of things to do before they die.

This film reminded me of my dad who past away last August 1 because of cancer. I like this movie because it has certain truths being conveyed to the viewers. Truths like
“Life is Short” and “Family & Friends is important”.
But there is one line or dialogue being spoken by the actor Morgan Freeman that I feel is the real lesson. “FIND THE JOY”.

Is your life a joy to others? Do you have joy? Most of us are busy everyday working just to earn a decent living. We tend to forget that there is more to life than this. We also sometimes forget that we are just passers-by here in this world.

Isn’t it time for us to look at life differently? Don’t you want to have a meaningful life other than what you are doing now?

I am glad that I was able to watch this movie. It has further reinforced my conviction of striving to have a meaningful life. And that creating this website of Free From Tears
(www.freefromtears.com) is not a mistake. May all of us have a life that is a joy to others and also may you have joy in your life.

“FIND THE JOY”.

Humor - Truth or Consequence

While a nun is riding a taxi...

TAXI DRIVER: Sister, I would like to ask a favor if I may. I have always fantasized kissing a nun.

NUN: Sure, ok with me, but first you have to be a Catholic. Second, you have to be single.

TAXI DRIVER: I am both Catholic and still single.

So the nun fulfills the taxi driver's fantasy and let him kiss her...

TAXI DRIVER: Thank you sister, but I must confess. I lied to you. I am really a Muslim plus I am married.

NUN: That's ok. I am on my way to a costume party. And I lied to you too. My real name is John.

Video - Imagine

Imagine
Sung By: John Lennon

"Imagine" is a utopian-themed song by John Lennon, which appears on his 1971 album, Imagine. The song was produced by Phil Spector. It is widely considered as one of the greatest songs of all time. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine voted "Imagine" the third greatest song of all time. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter said, "In many countries around the world — my wife and I have visited about 125 countries — you hear John Lennon's song 'Imagine' used almost equally with national anthems."

The lyrics were thought to be inspired by Lennon's hopes for a more peaceful world, though their origins are not known for certain. In 1963 Lennon penned the lyrics to "I'll Get You" with an opening verse of, "Imagine I'm in love with you, it's easy cause I know." The first verse of "Imagine" would seem to be a reworking of this. But the song's refrain may have been partly inspired by Yoko Ono's poetry, in reaction to her childhood in Japan during World War II.

According to The Guardian, primordial versions of the song's refrain can be found in her 1965 book Grapefruit, where she penned lines such as, "imagine a raindrop" and "imagine the clouds dripping."

Heaven Is a Place on Earth
Sung By: Belinda Carlisle

"Heaven Is a Place on Earth" is a song recorded by Belinda Carlisle, the lead singer of The Go-Go's. Written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, it hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisle's only U.S. chart-topper with or without The Go-Go's ("We Got the Beat" and "I Get Weak" each hit #2 & Vacation made #8 in 1982). A month later it hit Number One on the UK singles chart and held the spot for two weeks.
The lyrics of the song describe a woman's feelings (presumably) for a man, and how her love has made her realize that "heaven is a place on earth," and that the two of them together will create Heaven on earth. She also admits she has just begun to understand life, and that while she had fears, "I'm not afraid, any more."

The Living Years
Sung by: Mike & The Mechanics

"The Living Years" is the only number one song recorded by Mike & The Mechanics. It peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 25, 1989. It also reached number two in the UK Singles Chart. Co-written by Mike Rutherfort and B.A. Robertson, the song was inspired by the recent deaths of both men's fathers, and combine elements of both relationships. The lyrics describe the disagreements between Rutherford and his father, in addition to the profound impact of regret about things left unsaid between them. Also, they allude to the birth of Robertson's son three months after his father's death. Band member Paul Carrack performed the lead vocal.
